ask your prescriber

I was watching TV while folding "a little" laundry this morning (roughly an entire break's worth), and a commercial for Ambien CR came on. I guess I wasn't quite hip to the fact that people no longer need to ask their doctor about a certain medicine, they need merely to "ask their prescriber" for said medicine. 

Really? My prescriber? Very interesting terminology, Ambien. Since I haven't had health insurance for the past 5 years or so, maybe I am just out of touch with the way things are going down in the medical universe these days. I just signed myself up for some premium health insurance c/o the fine people at Syracuse University, so maybe I'll get a little more familiar. 

The first thing I need to find out: can I attend school to become a prescriber? It doesn't sound nearly as intense as attending school to be a doctor, but the title has an air of affluence and seems like it would be fairly lucrative.
