One thing that I really love about emoticons is that when someone sends one to you, you don't just see the colon, parenthesis, asterisk, or letter "P;" instead, you picture the person who sent it to you winking, sticking out their tongue, or what have you. You can see their face - their smile is somehow transmitted through those symbols.
And that's pretty nice.
